  • I haven’t tried any Piefeds or mbins. My impression is similar to yours: interpreted language and “no fancy design patterns” gives me the idea it’s probably great for quickly prototyping new features like categories and moderation tools, possibly at the cost of performance. If you’re looking at hosting, maybe reach out to a few piefed admins, ask what they think about it and if/when they tried Lemmy for a comparison.

The great thing about the Fediverse is afaik you can test other instances and even other softwares while still getting access to the same communities and posts.

  • I don’t understand why you would want an Australia-focused instance for this. A general-purpose instance like .world or shitjustworks seems more appropriate, and far more likely to find an audience who will engage in the community, rather than hosting on a tiny laidback instance where I’d wager either zero or one person would participate and the rest would be annoyed at all the distressing posts regularly appearing high on our feeds, because we have less local posts than those general-purpose instances.

  • Some of them will have masks. Definitely some of the NSN outsiders who will get disowned or fired if identified.

But some won’t. This rally was branded as a general nationalist patriot “March for Australia” against immigration, with organisers (halfheartedly) claiming they weren’t racists and associated with fash, despite clear evidence. So there will be people who don’t think they’re doing anything to be ashamed of while standing next to the Hitlerite cowards.

  • Albanese says not sending non-lethal parts to Israel would mean that Australia withdraws from a 16 or 17 country supply chain for the F-35 aircraft.

    Yes.

It would be an honour to be the first country to do so, and I hope we do it regardless of what our government demands. Just like we did when Robert Menzies told us to keep sending pig iron to Imperial Japan in 1938.

We’re not risking Australia’s future defence because of a war between two middle eastern countries

They’re risking Australia’s internal security by participating a genocide in our name. They’re risking Australia’s external defence by pretending the US is an ally and not a hostile competing imperial power. Look at how the US is treating Ukraine just like all its other proxy cannon fodder. Look how the US is treating close 5EYES partners like Canada. Look at how the US is treating us. That’s the future they’re choosing. And if that leaves us a tad more exposed to Indonesia or New Zealand invading us then it still beats the position we’re in now.

As for the laughable “contract” rhetoric, all I have to say is AUKUS subs.

  • I’m glad the activists made an effort to clarify to the employees that the action is targeting the company’s contract and not the workers.

A big mistake of some activists is to overlook the importance of workers in our industries and risk alienating them or even blaming them for systematic issues. One of the great things that the Port Botany ZIM protests did was have socialist groups use MUA links in the CPA and Solidarity (+ possibly other groups?) to make sure the employees knew beforehand the reasons for the protest and that the shift-blocking protests wouldn’t impact their pay due to how their contracts worked. This meant that employees generally either approved of or tolerated the protests. We saw something different happen in Melbourne, where in later days some of the activists seemed to want to fight against the employees who were going to work (unless I misremembered). And some anti-coal activists also neglect the importance of working with coal employees, luckily some of the groups emphasise demanding the government to adopt transition plans for training coal employees for other energy jobs. That way, you’re not needlessly making enemies of the working people and allowing in-routes for bosses’ propaganda.

    ex card carrying marxist here

I’m extremely interested to hear which card you carried, as this Marxist group sounds very strange and, well, not Marxist.

The sentences you said after clearly contradict Marx’s own theory and actions, as well as those of every Marxist group I’ve talked to in this country. The only one (1) I’ve know to be anti-union was the SEP, who are tiny and inconsequential and demand workers create their own union.

  • and I see the excuse that protesting is still useful because it gives you a means to organize for further action

That’s not “an excuse”. Look at basically all revolutions which weren’t just military coups and you can find meaningful protests. They’re a major entry point to those “better ways” you mention.

A protest isn’t inherently effective, going there and simply standing around listening to speeches is a waste of your time, but it is still an important tool in social change.

  • They are free to believe what ever idiocy they choose.

You say this as if their beliefs are inconsequential, merely ideas in an abstract. This group is a predatory cult. It was recently publicly revealed that one of their members already killed themselves due to internal oppression. They regularly threaten people (including politicians) with violence and commit violence, and members have been charged and arrested for doing so. They’re still doing it and growing in size. The law has shown itself ineffective at stopping them.

But ultimately, at the end of the day, this cult is organising with the explicit intent of exterminating people, including me. So, when do you believe I, or we, should stop them?
