As a counter point, i make less than my parents did when the were my age and pay more in rent than they did on their mortgage without adjusting for inflation. Also, buying food for a family costs essentially the same as buying food for one, as nearly all recipes you find are assuming you are gonna feed a family with it.
My mother used to go for groceries once every two weeks for 4 people.
It would cost about $80 in the 90s. I know this because she always saved receipts where she saved a lot on the total (back when sales were actually sales and not markups in disguise).
My grocery trip for one for two weeks is over $200. And I’m extremely frugal about it (couldn’t tell you the last time I bought meat, eggs, or butter, but easily over a year ago cuz it’s too expensive) something she wasn’t.
We were always poor, but that means something entirely different now…
Yeah i remember the first time my mom had a $100 grocery bill shortly after my baby brother was born in 2003. As an older person for this site I can attest that food prices have outpaced inflation by quite a bit, especially when looking at eating out.
Since 2014 groceries rose in price by 30% and restaurant pricing went up by over 60%.
Corporations are just continuously turning the screws and are then surprised when it affects consumer demand.
