Shermy stands watching Violet water a small fir tree. She says,“This year, I’ve planted my own Christmas tree!”
He stoops in front of her and asks,“Do you think it’ll be grown by then?”
She stands, alone, and says,“Gee, maybe it won’t…”
She leans over to the tree and exclaims,“C’mon, tree, grow!! You’ve got a deadline to meet!”

Nah, the main character was “Chuck” - at least that’s what some annoying loudmouth girl told me. I think she was into him, tho.
