Ive been using it since release, so for around 2 weeks now, and its pretty amazing. The OCR works well on paper stuff with clear contrast, but not so well on LCD screens. It supports non latin scripts and that also seemed to work well in my limited tests. The translation capabilities are just 1:1 the same as firefox’s translator model so it works pretty well but is far from perfect when it comes to slightly more complicated sentence structures.

The last two updates have added much needed UX features and it looks like the dev is very willing to build this into something truly great. One thing that isnt working yet is to export/share the overlayed image which would be cool.

just tried this today, with most of the other foss translators on fDroid. Uninstalled it after it translated one of my test phrases with the exact opposite.

Don’t trust it, if you’re trying to communicate with somebody who doesn’t speak a language you can understand.

it would be translated to English as “i don’t wish you a happy birthday” but “happy birthday” is so common, it is quickly enveloped in “happy birthday”, “joyeux anniversaire”.

plus some other simple plays on common sayings.

Yep, I think in those situations it’s best to write in a language you are comfortable with and let the reader use the tools of their choice to figure it out. That way if their first try gives them garbage they can use other methods to figure it out.

I have yet to see a machine translator whose output I’d trust to send out as my own.

There is a PR to allow the use of the translation engine by other apps. Once this lands I would love to see Fedilab have this as an option for its inline translations as an alternative to external services.

If the same translation engine is used in multiple apps, then it would probably make sense to have it at system level like it happens for TTS engines. I wonder of this is possible, somehow
