It is used to scam the people of a country but is just a statistic that should be used correctly

GDP is the sum of all goods and services produced in the country. This is colloquially taken to be proportional to how well its people are doing economically, as opposed to what it actually represents: the value of the output of a country. This is an important distinction, because we could simply boost our GDP by 2x by bumping the price of every good by 2x. This would mean everyone is 1/2 as rich compared to before.

This is one reason why certain services such as medical care can be significantly better in another country and much cheaper, while having a significantly lower GDP. For example, Cuba vs the US

Governments will boast about GDP and stock market gains and say “the economy is doing well,” when that could very well mean that prices have gone up. “The economy” is another useful term which means anything politicians want it to mean, because they can point to measures people dont understand to say things are going well even when purchasing power is down and people feel squeezed

GDP also fails to account for who owns the value of the goods and services. For example, a foreign business run and operated within a country will extract profits to the foreign owners country, so the benefits of money circulating and the value of money gets removed from the economy.

GDP is used by the IMF to determine if loans should be given, and thus has become the default measure of a country’s wealth. This is an issue given the above problems alone

  • Oftentimes people ignore that depression is also a product of a system that prioritizes profit over everything else including mental and physical health. You can go to therapy all you want but it doesnt put more money in your pocket or lower prices to lower financial stress, decrease food insecurity, doesnt increase job security and satisfaction, doesnt give you back the time your employment has robbed from you, doesnt improve relationships and your ability to form them, doesnt make third places pop into existence, etc. Therapy cant remove those factors that cause depression in the first place. I have increasingly heard stories of people going to therapy only for the therapists to realize that they literally cant do anything about the stressors because modern life is so systematically stacked against the individual.

Depression can cause permanent changes to your brain and thought patterns which makes it more likely for you to relapse or slip back into negative thought patterns if the right pressures are added, which is constant today. Therapy can provide alternative ways of thinking and coping mechanisms but cant completely remove those pressures which are outside of your control.

Then after retirement and benefits it’s anywhere from 20% to 50%. I’m at about 25% just with tax, 36% with benefits and retirement.

Depending on if your deductions are calculated correctly (you have to negotiate that with your job) you might end up getting a refund layer or have to pay, so in reality my rate is more like 30% overall. People with more expensive insurance or less tax credits and or other things on top of that are going to have it worse off.

I make half what I would need to be able to afford buying a home in my area and be able to make mortgage payments and still have money left
