You can literally see they have Terminal installed in the screenshot. It may not be default but it is certainly on that computer. But a web search is far more important than a program installed on the computer.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•I watch the first Star Trek Discovery episode, I didn't like it.English
7·13 days agoMy biggest issue is I just dont like any of the characters and I wouldn’t want to be on that ship. That to me is the biggest flaw of Discovery.
Every other Star Trek I can imagine it being so cool to get to be there. Discovery would be awful. Being around that crew sounds awful and exhausting.
I tried watching it and got to what I was told was a peak episode in S1E7 and it was still awful and seemed like it would be awful. No charm. I compare it to other episodes in sci fi like it and it has nearly 0 fun and the fun it had was dark and creepy.

2·4 months agoMovie Star Trek is different from TV Star Trek. Except for Insurrection which is just a 2 part episode in a movie trench coat. And probably Section 31 but I don’t plan to watch that and find out.
Gonna resurrect Tay?

65·8 months agoHow? I don’t get it. I’m not gonna go learn how to draw well just so I can shitpost. I’m not taking an artists job by using GenAI to make a picture of a Cat driving a moped. Using GenAI is not power intensive only training GenAI is and people using or not using it for trash memes isnt going to change if they chose to train another AI model.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Are there any Trek episodes where they enforce the Prime Directive to protect a developing world within Federation space from an external influence?English
3·8 months agoSNW S1E2 - Children of the Comet. This is a tricky one because of potential predestination and the end result being an accidental major break of the prime directive. A warp capable civilization is certain that a comet must destroy a pre warp civilization and refuse to let that change. The issue is that the ship/comet wants the Federation to interfere and does not intend to hit the planet. This is all in Federation space.
Another in Federation space that is also a loose fit is LD S5E7 - Fully Dialated where the crew must recover Data’s head from an alternate reality that has fallen on a pre warp world. The loose fit here is that the only reason they count as external is that it is Purple Data who is not technically a a member of this realities Federation and thus an outsider.
Lastly a decent fit but outside Federation space is Prodigy S1E7 - First Con-Tact. The crew first breaks the prime directive by making first contact with a pre warp civilization but then defends it by stopping a Ferengi from influence the civilization negatively. This is outside Federation space though.

8·8 months agoI drink milk, but milk isn’t superior to oat milk.
mammal milk has specific ingredients that are meant to specifically feed infants of that animal. So its often high in fat and has specific things that are meant to be digested by that animal. Breast milk from a human has special ingredients that help digest the high lactose content and those ingredients are not in other milks.
Now Oats have been designed over years to be digested by humans and other animals. They propagate by being consumed and then travel to other areas post consumption. The nutrition in oats and other vegetables is mostly there specifically to drive animals like us to eat them so that we propagate them.

15·8 months agoMilk is just watery fatty cow food with some extra steps involved.
I use far far less if I use a very small amount twice rather than a lot once. The shampoo will mix with oils in your hair and when you wash once you just keep rubbing the oil and detergent mix back onto yourself. Using a small amount and rinsing it off will make it function far better.

51·9 months agoThis is a fantastic reason to talk to a therapist.
You won’t ever really trust your friends or family who say you did nothing wrong. Other folks will try to explain it away but it doesn’t help either. Most people dealt with this and it sucks and when it hits you when you are vulnerable it can hurt for a long time.
Focus on who you are and who you want to be and building your confidence. Focus on boundary setting and clear communication with people in general. These are skills it sounds like you struggle with based off the problems you are stressing about.

Off My Chest@lemmy.world•Ghosted for the first time - fuck ghostsEnglish
53·9 months agoIt can be scary for anyone regardless of gender. I’ve twice had really bad reactions, once life threatening, after a break up and I’m a big man.
That doesn’t mean anyone is wrong for ghosting or getting ghosted. I just want to highlight that trying to focus on gender as if it matters is the same as focusing on race or size or religion. You shouldn’t say that a black person should expect to get ghosted because some people have had bad experiences with black people.
Look maybe this person is terrible and deserved to be ghosted. Maybe the other person was awful and ghosted them to hurt them. Maybe it was just an unfortunate reaction due to personal stress. But no one deserves to be told their gender makes them just need to just suck it up and expect it. Having to deal with the stress and self doubt that comes from having someone who you thought was a part of your life decide to cut you out instantly, it sucks.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus responds to Hellwig - "the pull request you objected to DID NOT TOUCH THE DMA LAYER AT ALL... if you as a maintainer feel that you control who or what can use your code, YOU ARE WRONG."
21·10 months agoYea but if someone uses those bindings then you can’t just not support it.
By the time this code gets into a large scale production system it will be 2029. That is when the bugs will come in if someone leveraged the Rust bindings.
You can ask the big company users at that time to contribute their fixes upstream, but if they get resistance because they have relatively junior Rust devs trying to push up changes that only a handful of maintainers understand, the company will just stop upstreaming their changes.
The primary concern that a major open source project like this will have is that the major contributors will decide that interacting with it is more trouble than it is worth. That is how open source projects move to being passion projects and then die when the passion dies.

15·10 months agoYea and if the Rust developers don’t show up to the show? Rust is a baby and it has done so little on its own. This isn’t a neat little side project, this is code that a major vendor will want to take up and will demand be maintained. There are implications on a global scale.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus responds to Hellwig - "the pull request you objected to DID NOT TOUCH THE DMA LAYER AT ALL... if you as a maintainer feel that you control who or what can use your code, YOU ARE WRONG."
218·10 months agoIt’s mostly in that linked thread. The high level of it is a guy wanted to push Rust code. The maintainer said no it would mean the API for this would be tied to Rust and that is unacceptable. It cause another big contributer to throw a fit and Linus said he can’t be everyone’s mom. They kept fighting for like 2 months apparently? Now Linus stepped in, looked at the code and said the Rust code clearly doesn’t impact the API in the way the maintainer was saying it just breaks itself if the maintainers allow changes to the API.
I kinda dislike the idea that it’s cool for people to contribute code that is so easy to break. I have a feeling after it happens a few times they are going to claim that it is being done intentionally and that the slap fights will carry on.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 Wraps FilmingEnglish
3·10 months agoWe have like three entirely reasonable shows all setup that they keep not even touching. All of them episodic, all of them able to both speak to new generations and old.
Upper Decks: Live action show with the characters from Lower Decks. Primary focus is the main characters coming to terms with the fact that they are good enough to be senior members of a crew. Continue the idea that they are the little ship that could and their missions focus around support rather than flagship or the biggest of the bads.
Prodigy 2.0: Again live action, with Ella Purnell as a captain who is super in demand and capable and would be fantastic in the role. Focus here is again episodic, when the rest of the Federation has abandoned exploration due to all the BS at the start of Picard, they are the only crew left with the charter to seek out new life and new civilizations. You have an incredibly young but capable cast and easily could bring in some heavy hitters to support them.
Legacy: This idea has floated around a ton since Picard S3, honestly its the least developed of the ideas and I’d rather see a way to roll it into one of the much better and more fleshed out ideas above. I feel like the final scene in Picard was an afterthought while both Lower Decks and Progidy it was a true capstone.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Alex Kurtzman Gives Live-Action Comedy Update, Says Star Trek Can “Broaden”English
5·11 months agoThe new 20 episode season is a 10 episode season with 5 webisodes and a cheaper side project like a cartoon or anthology.
Honestly this is better to me because it enables the good plots of the smaller episodes to get all the focus without forcing some awful secondary plot to fill run time.
jerakor@startrek.websitetoUnited States | News & Politics@midwest.social•Oregon Healthcare Workers Launch Largest Medical Strike in State History
2·11 months agoFor an RN the average is $100k and the top top is ~$160k.
The answer is that the overall healthcare system needs to be rebuilt. The fact though is that the hospitals all know the incoming administration will be cool with corner cutting but also won’t pay out very well.
The trend already is for insurance to never pay out. Currently you have to bill for 4X the price of something just so the insurance company can write off how big of a savings things are when they pay out only 1/4th the cost which ends up hopefully being the actual cost.
So you have a hospital administration attempting to extract value from their workers, because they know that no one else will pay. Besides if a strike goes on they can just get the new administration to handwave hiring “holistic nursing” professionals who take a fake online test. They can just read out that the AI says that the problem is a combination of verbal irregularity and overall health being a bit behind.

Commander Abe Sapien’s dialog early on is pretty rough. His character is entirely ruined by the forced tension with Michael.
I wish there was like a Season 0 where I could learn to care about the characters before the events of Season 1. I feel like it is taking me on a journey the characters havent earned.
