  • Customs and border control is a federal agency. States do not control their own borders.

If you have to interact with the federal government, it is generally safer to go to offices in accepting areas, because despite federal control, offices are staffed by locals. For safety, check in with locals and vet your social security office before arrival.

However Canadians cannot do this by selecting their destination. When flying to the US, the customs check takes place in the foreign airport. They call it pre-clearence. Every major Canadian airport has pre-clearence, so your passport will be checked by customs agents, specifically selected for a foreign deployment. Upon the return trip the federal tsa will check your passport again before the flight.

My advice for travelers to the US is do not. Go literally anywhere else, or stay home. But if you have to, I would consider a land crossing, because in that case you only pass through a federal check one time upon arrival. But regardless check with local communities to ensure the federal agents you interact with are the least bad possible.

  • State governors do have the authority to deploy the national guard within their own borders. Its pretty well agreed upon both internationally and domestically that its fine to send a military into a sovereign state upon request of the local government.

I dislike governor gavin, but requesting the guard when he did is within his authority as governor.

Anyone calling this hypocrisy doesn’t understand the concept of consent.

  • No. It mean the literally opposite depending on context.

Parliament houses usually have a big table in the middle of the room. When legislation is brought fourth for discussion it is placed on the table in the middle of the room. In this case tabling legislation means discussing it.

In other assembly buildings legislators sit at personal tables, so tabling the legislation means removing it from discussion at the front of the room and placing it on the private table, removing it from discussion.

If you read the news and it said that kier starmer tabled some legislation, and another article said that Pramila Jayapal tabled legislation that would mean the literal opposite.

Its an bad word that should be replaced with something more clear.

  • For context this is the fullest version I have found of the DM conversation that is screenshotted on the petition.

    User with blue bubble: "Hello!

"I just wanted to ask if it is possible to implement support for the Firefox extension Shinigami Eyes onto Lemmy with activity pub as it works for mastodon. (reverse engineering might be necessary as the creator updates the add-on once every few months and does not communicate much with the user base)

“It would be a great tool to have for moderators as it allows the community to quickly identify transphobes to root them out.”

Neutomic: "Hi, were are these “transphobes” and why do they need to be “rooted out”?

Blue: "I have seen a few as Lemmy is pretty good on moderation.

"I thought it would be a great idea as having another method for the moderator toolkit to hold those who make our communities less safe and inclusive accountable to the rules.

“It’s the bourgeoisie pushing the transphobia to distract from the economic issues in the capitalist system from the proletariat especially in anglophones countries.”

Neutomic: "That’s interesting. The transgender topic is clearly promoted by the bourgeoisie, going as far as putting lgbt flags on government buildings, or allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports at the Olympics. Yet the same bourgeoisie is secretly pushing transphobia too? Seems rather far fetched to me.

“Anyway you were talking about a Firefox plugin. Not sure why you message me, there is no approval needed to develop for Lemmy. So go ahead, I’m sure with a bit of effort you can get it working!”
