Imho: It’s a question of support … all the named distribution are a community effort in support.
Valve can’t and probably won’t try to put themself in a situation where they “must” deliver support outside of well know hardware combinations.
We change constantly. Not sure what happens tomorrow and the past is something we learn from.

@FishFace @x00z my small thought -> i think today no solution can prevent “cheaters” because you can’t differ “cheaters” from users anymore if they want to.
Here is why ->
One PC is running the game -> a second PC emulates Keyboard and mouse inputs using a CAM (Capture Card) / Sound (microphon / digital capture) and an on the Game trained AI.
So what does any “cheat protection” offer if they don’t protect against serious cheating ?
PS: “The only still working protection is lan play with control over hardware / software and players like done on real events”

My whole comment -> check out https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2020/11/check-out-linux-porter-ethan-lee-show-off-how-linux-games-are-built-and-packaged/ and the video in it.
PS: This guy really knows what he is talking. All of his linux ports are top notch and if needed he provides extremly fast updates. GLIBC updates breaking stuff ( which has happen once in alot of years) -> he got you

@TheBat @grue how do you define not working correctly ? …
the GFX Card booted
the GFX Card rendered the desktop
the GFX Card rendered Games
… the only issue it wasn’t as fast as possible …
-> solution on windows -> you report and get a new driver or you get a new driver cause you don’t know that you don’t have the max performance
-> solution on linux -> you report and get a new driver or you get a new driver cause you don’t know that you don’t have the max performance
^^^ where is the difference ?

@Canconda who knows how many people get moved by this topic. Let’s say noone believed in >1.4m people signing a petition for game preservation either … noone would have believed that europeans say that US Tech Companies should be regulated even if it means worse tarrifs … if you already give up before trying to change something you lost already. From my point of view this creates something which can be used in a really bad way for content moderation ( some would call it censorship ).

@Canconda i don’t think that it’s currently about the money. this is another fight against liberal ideas. In the last months i have seen bigger companies giving into a certain speech … or do we want to talk about all those companies even outside of the us who don’t talk about DEI anymore ?

@Canconda @ToxicHolyGrenade ;) i think you can google yourself for the special scenes in Dragon Age: Origins , The Witcher , GTA 5 or Leisure Suit Larry … that are the 3 games out of might head wich had alot of publicity because of this topic. With the same argumentation those groups might try to remove or change those games too …

@dataprolet @AbnormalHumanBeing The huge difference is the reaction time of interactive elements (aka the close to realttime behavior). This is all mostly because of the BORE Scheduler … installing a cachy os bore kernel on a default arch feels nearly the same.
So Wayland + Bore Scheduler it’s really feeling crazy good. I would not even want to move back to X11 cause damm it feels “slugish” compared.

@Coelacanthus @bargu isn’t protons fallback esync if winesync isn’t available ? Wasn’t it esync -> winesync (fastsync) -> ntsync ?

@CoyoteFacts @bargu the biggest issue … some distributions (cachyos for example) have such a new kernel which doesn’t support fsync ( winesync ) and you want to use the newest kernel for modern amd gpu’s ( eg.: 9070 xt) so downgrade to 6.11 ( last kernel with winesync ) is not a good choice.

@AwesomeLowlander @princessnorah
Secret World Legends
Catherine Classic
Just 2 examples which with default Proton have at least “issues”

If the pain is not enough to replace a headphone with a new one , you most likely aren’t ready to change for linux right now. There will be more you need to learn, more which feels different and more which won’t work first try or even requiere you to rethink or replace things.
@Ulrich
I totally agree but not all users will see it the same way ;) You see how often people feel entitled to get some help :)
I would go even further -> if valve supports more hardware and opens up steamos for none business partners ( aka end users ) … the press might pressure them into things they don’t want.
