  • I get what you mean. Some copy of a Kafka book I had (I think it was the Trial) had this foreword about the tough translation choices they had to make and how some things were just hard to convey with the same sense. It kinda blew my mind reading Dante’s Inferno that they were able to translate poetry and have it make sense and still flow like a poem.

But as someone who enjoys language dabbling, I realize that I’ll only learn a few in my life, and those to a pretty limited level. For works that aren’t originally in that handful of languages, I don’t feel much regret for reading the English. The options are that, or to not engage with the work at all. If something is valuable enough to want to read, then surely it’s valuable enough to experience in some way, even if imperfect?

But then for the languages I do have some interest in learning, I do feel some tiny guilt reading translations. There’s value to me in setting up some book as a goal and hoping to read it as written. Still, I think the re-read, the 2nd time in original language, has its own appeal.

  • Yeah, it’s hard. I feel like it got a little more comfortable when I stopped trying to stress about memorizing them. But it is probably good to go ahead and do flashcards for 1-10 things and 1-10 days.

Once you get used to a few counters, then learning a new counter is like learning a word. You can kinda feel when rendaku might kick in, or ichi gets shortened, etc.

Even still, it’s just hard. I know I’ve seen a few videos on YouTube or TikTok of people just counting, or doing songs with counting. But unfortunately I don’t have any on hand to link.

It’s funny, Sakurai addresses something like that right at the start of this Direct. He mentions that he made the game on request, and was confused that they wanted it. “It’s a frantic racing game with familiar characters, isn’t that just like Mario Kart?” Then he kinda shrugs it off, like “Yeah, guess it is lol.”

  • Basically, but there are some differences. It’s more like a physical key to a digital game, rather than a one-time unlock code.

    GKC:

    • No data on card, requires internet & Nintendo service first use
    • Installs to storage, taking up space
    • Requires card inserted into system to play
    • Box is an artifact to display on store and home shelves
    • Freely re-sell or buy used

    Full physical:

    • All data on card, no internet dependence
    • Only requires enough space for a save game
      • (Unless you download patches and updates, but still takes less storage)
    • Requires card inserted into system to play
    • Box is an artifact to display on store and home shelves
    • Freely re-sell or buy used

    Full digital:

    • Internet & Nintendo service required to purchase.
      • Long term, store front will likely go down much earlier than re-download servers
    • Installs to storage, taking up space
    • No need to put card in system, play any digital game installed at any time
    • Retail presence is limited to codes, either printed on cardboard or code-in-a-box
    • No need to store any artifacts, saving valuable space in your home
    • Unable to re-sell or buy used.

So, it’s just a slightly different mix of pros and cons. Gotta pick which things you care about.
