This is a great paper that solidifies (no pun intended) the framework that Mars structurally is still similar to earth - a solid inner core composed of mainly O, Fe, S, and C surrounded by a solid mantle. This opens more questions, If the Martian core is still solid, then what events in Mars’ past led to the geomagnetic field collapsing? How is there a lack of a dynamo field if the core is still crystallizing (can it be reactivated? Maybe with a giant hamster wheel?)

I’ve made traffic control plans for road construction and depending on the locality police are rarely involved with traffic control. This area clearly looks like the state’s DOT right-of-way, and these might be contractors in which case they are required to submit traffic control plans to the DOT and DOT confirm if it for safety. However, contractors have to actually execute the plans in the field. This could be a case of bad plans or a site supervisor who didn’t check the original traffic control plans matched with what was on the ground.
Yea Yucca mountain is a sad tale. A lack of community engagement and politics ruined what was other wise a geotechnically sound design. Having a national repository for a nation as large as the US might be impractical in retrospect especially involving interstate rail transport. I think local containment of waste is key to reduce shipping costs and trailing the waste through developed areas. That requires planning a nuclear site near a geological repository which might not be part of design plans.

I endorse nuclear power and am enjoying the second look it is getting now but as a geologist I ask where the nuclear waste will go. No one ever wants to talk about it and there is really easy solution, the deep subsurface (miles below the ground). It’s safe, cheap, and Finland has shown how it’s done.
This is part of a broader issue in preparing our next generations for jobs of the future. To build out this infrastructure you need smart technical people to make it work and ask the tough questions, but I know this administration doesn’t care about that.
It’s difficult notion to wrestle with… I never like showing my patriotism and I always read American history very critically (thanks Howard Zinn!) but it’s also the only country I’ve lived in and will probably stay in for the rest of my life. I’m inspired that change can happen (even if it’s bad) in this country and even if is a long and hard path, I guess I can’t say I’ve given up yet. I also have two kids so I gotta try to give them something better.

One aspect that struck me too was that American law did not apply west of the continental divide, so justice within the wagon train was decided by the group. Also, families within the wagons had a hierarchy and carried debts between one another if they borrowed one another’s supplies. I never really thought about the economics and different classes of people traveling together. Even when they were dying in the cabins (which were separated by miles) at Truckee lake, one family member coughed up $25 ($1000 today) to buy the ox carcass from another family… it’s crazy they didn’t pool resources and try to survive together.
I agree it seems a little silly to downvote especially if you follow the instance. If I had to make a guess, if you don’t follow this instance and this post appears in your “All” or “local” feed, then some users might downvote because it’s not relevant to them or they don’t like the topic of cannibalism…or maybe their finger slipped.
