  • To use a different atrocity as an example, the Japanese saw the Chinese as “pigs” during the Nanjing Massacre.

It’s easy to see how dehumanizing your enemy has an effect. Here is an excerpt from The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.

there were those in the imperial army who saw the Chinese as subhuman beings whose murder would carry no greater moral weight than squashing a bug or butchering a hog. In fact, both before and during the war members of the Japanese military at all levels frequently compared the Chinese to pigs. For example, a Japanese general told a correspondent: “To be frank, your view of Chinese is totally different from mine. You regard the Chinese as human beings while I regard the Chinese as pigs.”

My question is: can it be turned off?

Mozilla has been trying to get me to look at news or use Pocket for years now, but it’s easy to turn off.

Edit to add: my above reference to turn off two different settings I’ve turned off for years now seemed obvious to me that I assumed it could be turned off.

Lot of people didn’t read past the first sentence.

Oooh this is lemmy.ml. Fuck gross bye

  • Especially during this time period, it would likely mean multiple things before genitalia.

“Dick” was a pretty common word for a detective, as in “hiring a private dick.” These comics are probably chock full of humorous uses of “dick.”

For this one specifically, the first place tineye sees it on the internet is on a “forgotten cool” tumblr in 2015, which also doesn’t cite where it came from.

  • It seems to be none of that. It just seems to be a marketing effort noting that it’s a low-cost coffee.

To celebrate the limited-time rebrand, the company is offering consumers a 12-month “lease” of Maxwell Apartment coffee, which is designed save coffee lovers across the United States money. For less than US$40, consumers can stock their pantry with a full year of coffee to save coffee enthusiasts more than US$1000 annually.

“Two-thirds of American adults drink coffee every day, which can add up quickly, especially these days,” says Holly Ramsden, Head of Coffee, North America at the Kraft Heinz Company.

“Maxwell House believes no one should have to go without great tasting coffee and Maxwell Apartment delivers the same delicious taste people know and love, at a value that celebrates all our fans are doing to make smart choices in their lives.

It’s cheap coffee. They’re literally going “hey, times are getting tougher. Who wants cheap coffee?” This is seems like the opposite of what you’re indicating.
