Why is this image so fucking ugly??? Were the hundreds of billions of funding really not enough to employ one (1) good web or graphic designer?

Technology@lemmy.zip•Bezos & Nvidia backed Perplexity AI makes surprise bid for Google ChromeEnglish
6·3 months agoIf they at least did 100-200bn… But this is probably mostly to signal to the US courts that there are parties interested/fianancially able to buy Chrome and to establish them as a bidder when/if Chrome actually should be sold. Also, just getting attention on Perplexity AI whose products are losing comparative advantage rapidly as the AI firms add search capability to their models.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Thinking of switching my gaming desktop to linux. Should I?English
12·3 months agoAs other people noted, Bazzite/Fedora Silverblue can absolutely bite you in the foot if you leave the “normal use cases” — and if you’re not just gaming on the device, you sooner or later will. All of this is solvable and IMO worth it, but probably not great for a beginner trying to become more knowledgeable.
Tldr good for absolute beginners, good for “experts” (in both cases because it very rarely gets in your way/breaks)

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Thinking of switching my gaming desktop to linux. Should I?English
483·3 months agoBazzite is a Fedora Atomic based immutable distro focused on gaming, this means…
- out of the box support for Nvidia cards
- ships with a lot of useful gaming utilities
- very hard to break as you should primarily be installing Flatpaks and can do rollbacks
Basically all modern Linux distros have virtualization support, so does Bazzite, of course. Actual performance differences between distros is also negligible, so feel free to choose whatever you like.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Very large amounts of gaming gpus vs AI gpusEnglish
3·3 months agoFor your personal use, you probably shouldn’t get an “AI” GPU. If you start needing a terrabyte of VRAM and heat, space, and energy start getting real problems, reconsider. Even if you need more VRAM than the best gaming GPU (i.e. 5090…), it will be cheaper to get multiple gaming GPUs and use them as a cluster (you will take a performance hit though).

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Study: Experienced developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower
17·4 months agoThis tracks pretty much with my conclusions for myself, neat.
It’s crazy, I’m fooled every time again and think “surely I must be faster like this” when after a few days an in-depth reflection/looking at actual commits shows that nope, I wasn’t.
You obviously also need an account for everything. This requirement is only communicated at checkout.
Honestly, this may be my favourite explanation of the fediverse yet.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•In 6 hours it will be illegal to say "I support Palestine Action" in the UK, with a sentence of up to 14 years in prison.
29·4 months agoGrrrrr, he very likely didn’t say that.
The closest to it I could find is “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws” by Tacitus (The Annals of Imperial Rome).
Cicero lived at the end of the republic, his problem wasn’t too many laws…

Gnome@discuss.tchncs.de•It’s True, “We” Don’t Care About Accessibility on LinuxEnglish
23·5 months agoThe GNOME Foundation has been investing a lot of money to improve accessibility on Linux, for example funding Newton, a Wayland accessibility project and AccessKit integration into GNOME technologies. Around 250,000€ (1/4) of the STF budget was spent solely on accessibility.
I didn’t know that it was this much, that’s so great! I think people with disabilities deserve to be able to use free software just as much as people without disabilities do (maybe even more since I may be better able to handle all the BS e.g. Microsoft might throw at me than let’s say a blind person) and this is important work in ensuring that.
Although the article talks mainly about all of the negative stuff people are saying, I’m still positively surprised by the amount of work the community is already putting in and I think that the free software vision is one that aligns very well with, well, accessible software.

This is so fucking annoying. Whenever you try to run something not clearly meant for the desktop, there is like a 80/20 chance that you can completely forget suspend…
