  • My parents have always been conservative, to the point where in high school I was very much the same because my dad would always play right wing radio on the drive to school.

    I graduated high school and went to college, where I was no longer stuck in such an echo chamber, and I slowly stopped believing in that horseshit.

    But my parents never left that bubble, and when Trump came around it got worse. We fought each other on it occasionally, but still had a relationship. Then Biden came, and things got slightly better. I was less anxious at the state of the world. I knew things were still fucked, but there was at least a glimmer of a shred of hope that the Trump era was fading, and at the very least it wasn’t something I had to immediately worry about.

    Then the second Trump administration came, and our relationship fell apart. I was and am beyond pissed at them for voting at for an obvious nazi, among a number of other issues.

    So we tried therapy for a bit, and it fell apart after about 2-3 months. So I was even more pissed off at them, and they were oblivious as to why I was pissed, despite explaining it to them numerous times. So now I’m low contact with them both.

  • Also, I’d roll for how much doom accrues each session, potentially with a variable die depending on how much the players accomplished. That way it’s rolling dice and affected by the players actions, but ultimately you can still influence the the pace as you go.

    As I’ve been thinking about it the last few days, this has crossed my mind as well. Rolling for this makes a lot of sense.

    I’d probably do something along the lines of:

    • Wasteful session --> 1d20 doom
    • Mid session --> 1d10 doom
    • Decisive session --> 1d4 doom

    But I think I definitely want to avoid instant end game/death scenarios, such as BBEG boss encounter type stuff. Especially because I like the idea of the BBEG being a literal god, with the best case scenario being that said god is not resurrected. They still exist, ready to start plans anew. The best the PCs can hope for is a few more hundred years of no lovecraftian apocalypse.

  • the people who make posts like this one would then claim that “work or eat boring food” counts as coercion.

    The food doesn’t need to be boring. But even under that assumption, it would still be less coercive, and therefore better.

    All of that takes an enormous amount of labour to produce.

    It sure does, but we live in a time of historically unheard of automation and excess. Over a century ago Kropotkin calculated a 5 hour work day/300hr work year to be the minimum needed per worker. And we’ve had a shit load of technicological advances since then. Even with the increases in amenities I’d be shocked if the true current number isn’t drastically lower.

    And your examples are all examples of things that people would genuinely like to work on. For example Mr. Technology connections is obsessed with heat pumps. I’m working on open source games, even while currently living under the coercion of capitalism. And I wouldn’t mind putting significant time into working to maintain a nation park, so long as it didn’t mean that it fucked with my food, shelter, and healthcare.
