  • The article addresses the topic of how quickly the banning of this kind of material can get out of hand:

These are, it seems, the same people going on book-banning crusades that ensare such smut as Calvin & Hobbes comics.

Magic Tree House author Mary Pope Osborne, children’s poet Shel Silverstein and Calvin and Hobbes cartoonist Bill Watterson have joined Judy Blume, Sarah J. Maas, Eric Carle and Kurt Vonnegut on a mind-boggling list of hundreds of books purged from some Tennessee school libraries.

The removals are the result of a growing political movement to control information through book banning. In 2024, the state legislature amended the “Age-Appropriate Materials Act of 2022” to specify that any materials that “in whole or in part” contain any “nudity, or descriptions or depictions of sexual excitement, sexual conduct, excess violence, or sadomasochistic abuse” are inappropriate for all students and do not belong in a school library. This change means books are not evaluated as a whole, and excerpts can be considered without context, if they have any content that is deemed to cross these lines. This leaves no room for educators and librarians to curate collections that reflect the real world and serve the educational needs of today’s students.

  • Ok, I think I found it then:

How do you respond to the idea that the new path is much more difficult for neurodivergent individuals to use?

Respectfully, I personally do not agree with this criticism, even though I’ve heard it before. Anecdotal evidence is one thing, but even in this thread there are a lot of neurodivergent individuals who prefer the path.

How do you feel about the criticism of the new path in terms of overall user experience?

We read it all, and have made a number of changes based on the feedback. However, as I said above the new path is better for usage and we also believe it is on average better for learning, since the in the previous layout people spent a lot of time redoing the lessons they already knew only to extend their streak or compete in the leaderboards, while in the new path the vast majority of lessons actually teach people.

What do you think about the decline in stock value since the new path was implemented? Or is the timeframe too short for you to draw meaningful conclusions?

I like the conspiracy theory :) Given that all metrics are equal or better in the new path, I can’t imagine this is related (the stock market has been doing weird things in the last several months, especially for tech companies).

  • It’s a preference, I get it.
But there are a few major issues that the new Reddit has that aren’t an issue with the old Reddit view:

    • Forced to login to view certain communities (or if you’re on a VPN).
    • Ads that pretend to be redditors commenting.
    • Needing to click “view more comments” after scrolling past 3 or 4 comments
    • Needing to expand all comments just to follow a conversation.
    • Custom upvote/downvote icons are not supported.
    • If you’re viewing a thread (not logged in) and you want to upvote/comment on something, after logging in the new Reddit immediately redirects you to the Reddit homepage instead of allowing you to upvote/comment immediately where you were at.

  • Rather than removing entirely, it would be great if we had a community where we could just upload our top comments to, and then redirect users from Reddit to your comment on a Lemmy instance.

On Reddit users would see something like:

This has been deleted in protest of Reddit’s privacy policy. If you really want to know what was written here, please see my comment on this alternative service here: https://piefed.social/post/740543#comment_6045217

Using pie fed here because it’s (probably?) less likely to be caught by some Reddit automod filter, I think other redditors might be attracted to it more, I’ve heard they abstract votes* to a different account from your actual account (slightly more privacy that way), and it’s good to spread out user bases among the fediverse instances.

You could do something similar with your top posts. Just repost it to the appropriate community and then edit the post on Reddit to redirect there through pie fed.

*Edit: Pie fed only votes with anonymous accounts for you when sharing votes with an untrusted instance. So not quite as privacy oriented as I had originally thought.

  • While the goal post keeps moving, it’s the opposite of your statement. As explained in the article:

That target would represent a doubling in spending for the nonprofit, which has disbursed more than $US100 billion since it was co-founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates in 2000. Originally, the foundation was set to close 20 years after the Microsoft co-founder’s death.

“I have decided to give my money back to society much faster than I had originally planned,” Gates, 69, wrote in a statement. “I will give away virtually all my wealth through the Gates Foundation over the next 20 years to the cause of saving and improving lives around the world.”
