2·1 month agoI definitely wouldn’t expect people to have heard of Kirk at all. Even within the US he was a bit of a niche asshole. But I would expect that before posting “RIP <somedude> he was a good guy” they would do some quick web searches and get an idea of what somedude was about and then only post if they agreed that that’s their notion of a good guy.

9·1 month agoPeople always imagine this as “I will pay you $100 to kick the puppy” and of course they would never.
But what actually happens is that you have a long-term donor. You rely on their help (they’re paying for you to be able to hire a nice college intern who’s really smart and has been fun to have on the project). They never tell you what to do so you see them as more of a friend than anything else. It’s perfectly normal to get some lunch with friends and talk. You’re stuck on some problems and they have some good connections that help you out. That might even be worth more than $100k, but it’s not money at all so it’s OK that they’re helping you like this. They also talk you up, which is like free advertising except you didn’t ask for it so that also doesn’t count. Anyway, at some of the lunches they’re telling you about what’s going on with them and there’s some problems they’re dealing with that you could help with. They don’t ask for help, of course, because they know you’re independent. But being independent means it’s OK for you to do what you want. Even help a friend out who didn’t ask for help so they’re not influencing you…

11·2 months agoYou didn’t address your misuse of “girl” which I pointed out. Now you’ve used “moron”, “imbecile” and “mentally deficient” all of which are (outdated) psychology diagnoses. And “mouth breather” which… the meaning is right there. Oh and “dumber” (“dumb” means “unable to speak”).
It seems to me that you actually don’t have any problem with misusing words. Except for one specific word. Why’s that, I wonder?

61·2 months agoIf by any chance, one’s identity is reviled, their entire behaviour history would be out in the wild.
So close to a sweet meter. What do you think of
“If, by some chance, one’s handle’s reviled / their foul history would be out in the wild.”
? It’s not perfect. Probably just a little more work-shopping.

1·2 months agoNot really that weird? Basically every organization does this or is immediately unsuccessful. The only exception is companies under a government that’s stable enough to carry water for them.
This doesn’t mean that the organizations are a net benefit.

32·2 months agoThe nature of language is to change over time. Help yourself to internalize that and a lot of these things may become less stressful.
Your attempt to use a non-inflammatory example doesn’t really work: “literally” has meant “exaggeratedly” for at least the past 200 years (likely more, it’s just been used extensively with that meaning for 200y).
If you try to demand that language have strict meaning, it’s just not going to work. Watch:
girls
What’s the definition of “girl”? Do they need to be prepubescent? Pre-postpubescent? Or are you using it in the (gasp, shock) sloppy sense of “a girl or a woman”? You’ve fallen into the exact same pitfall that you were complaining about.
The resolution isn’t to claim that all words have an absolute meaning, but to understand that human language is fluid and extraordinarily context-sensitive.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Kazeta: the new Linux-based physical media OS (my article!)English
191·2 months agoThanks for sharing!
Commentary on your writing: I was a bit surprised by the writing style of your article at first. Then I realized: Kazeta is an art-piece and you are writing a “the arts” article on it. I think that this was the correct choice for the topic, but I found it hard to appreciate because coming from a link in the “Linux Gaming” community I was expecting a gaming or tech article instead. That would have had stats like how fast games load from “off” to “playing”, some example builds and prices for making an ideal Kazeta, a review of how hard it was to make your own SD, etc.
I think the mental space I’d put this in is like a Rolling Stone interview where you’re writing lyrically about Alkazar and his work while weaving in paragraph quotes from him.

Apple@lemmy.zip•Apple Says App Store Changes Go Too Far in New Epic Games Appeal FilingEnglish
81·2 months agoMaybe with enough bribes, Apple can get the SC to just invert the whole ruling: now every Fortnite transaction has to give Apple a cut, even when its unrelated to their platform.
Come on. Obama’s continuation of presidential power-creep is not what enables Trump. Trump getting elected, taking over the Supreme Court, getting elected again, having all the billionaires lick his ass, etc is what enables him.
If you wanna lay it on Obama, blame him for not taking the right wing seriously enough and going after them at the local level where they had been building strength for the past 50+ years. Or for not betraying all his moderate-conservative supporters to implement some seriously progressive policy.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•how can i decide what language to learn?English
2·3 months agoDo you already know some French Canadians? The best and most fun way to learn a language is by talking with people. If you know someone who speaks a language you want to learn and they’re willing to struggle through talking with you, pick that language.
But this was arbitrary. It’s not like “why are there only 16 colors on this video game” (because of space constraints). They could have made it 257 users and nothing would overflow. Given that, I think they should have made a human-comfortable number (multiple of 10) instead of a machine-comfortable number (power of 2).

Curated Tumblr@sh.itjust.works•on the male loneliness epidemicEnglish
1·3 months agoIt sounds like your position is that the loneliness epidemic affects everyone and that there’s no reason to talk about it being male loneliness. If so, I believe you’re in agreement with the OP and feminist circles: “There is no male loneliness epidemic. It is simply a loneliness epidemic.”
However, if you nose around online, you’ll find that there are MRA-type circles who are very invested in the idea that it is a specifically-male problem. I interpret the OP img-text as being a reaction against that. To continue the New University quote from above: “By arbitrarily gendering a universal loneliness, our fragmented society becomes further fractured, and the discourse surrounding relationships becomes a breeding ground for misogyny.”

f(X)andg(X)both exist. I think thatXis actually two populations:Xa andXb.”You’ve quoted this to say, “if you don’t think
g(X)exists then why did you post??”(
f(X)is men who want friendship,g(X)is men who want sex,Xa is men in feminist circles,Xb is men not in feminist circles.)

Does this mean that, at most, OpenAI would be forced to pay him 150k? That seems irrelevant (to both parties, in fact).
