  • Yeah, happened to me. I tried to go to one of the bank locations but they not so subtly told me to fuck off and call their customer service instead if for some reason I couldn’t use the ‘in-app help menu’. The entire concept of me losing access to it seemed alien to them, as it I was born into the app or some shit, idk how much they pay those ghouls to stand there and gaslight folks like that but I sure hope it’s a lot.

To restore it I had to call them and turned out I needed to know some kind of extra hidden secret “telephone banking” password after fighting past 10 people who could barely speak English. I didn’t know it ofc and like an hour later I was able to prove who I was.

  • I legitimately chuckled at first but I can’t tell if you’re serious.

House? Toyota? I make well over median wage, save everything, and those things might as well be private jets to me.

My savings interest rate is some of the best countrywide and it’s literally less than house price increase averages alone.

I have 5 yrs exp and an MSc in STEM and I haven’t heard back from a single job application I’ve sent out even while I’m still employed after sending out at least 10 of highly personalized applications of CV + cover letter.

Everyone else I know - people who are frankly - way smarter than me live with parents and are unemployed with the exception of one person who lives with their parents and has no money, but is an accomplished academic researcher (maths I think) who gives talks at international events.

What are you smoking? What world do you live in? How do I get there?

  • Lucky you can get away with that. My bank requires the app, without it you can’t even make transactions via the web UI because the 2FA is via their app. You can’t even order a new card or many times order a physical card via their web UI because they don’t bother sending you a physical thing anymore, intention being is that you add the card to Google pay for NFC and online payments and use it that way only. Everything is via the app. I actually have no idea what happens if I lose my phone, because as far as it has been made to appear my bank account is on my phone, there are no sign in details or anything of the sort, it’s either there or it isn’t.

  • That’s crazy. Yeah in the rest of the world you can’t do shit on a bank website, it’s mostly just view only, and the rest is via the app. If it lets you do anything at all, it’ll require 2FA via the app.

You can transfer money from a savings account with one bank to another account with another bank just via tapping said bank account icon in the app, like you don’t even need the BIC/IBAN/AccNo/Name or any details, it knows where to go just because you have the app of the other bank, all you do is tap the icon.

I’m not even sure you can withdraw the money from the savings account without having the app of the target bank installed on the phone, signed into the target account.

Same way you can add a card to Google Pay by just tapping a button in the bank app, no details or anything required.

Frankly I don’t even know where any one of my bank cards are, I remember for a good while I had a credit card that I didn’t actually have physically because when you open the credit card account (which requires extra checks compared to what is default - debit cards) they don’t bother to ship the physical thing to you unless you explicitly ask for it (via an option in the app), since most people just use it only via Google Pay because everywhere is cashless and uses only NFC.

I didn’t realize at first but it meant that my “card” didn’t even have a PIN, because there was no way to physically have it, any large transactions are authorized in the app, everything else, including IRL is implicitly authorized by me unlocking my phone with my fingerprint, which is required to make NFC payments on Android. I think with Apple phones it’s required to open the app but for me since 2018 it’s been muscle memory to tap the fingerprint reader and slap the phone on the NFC reader on anything from the tube to the dodgy corner shop.

To get the actual card details it’s a relatively hidden submenu in the app, to add to Google pay is a giant button on the card icon in the app.

Convenient as hell but the sheer amount of privacy violations involved and info that must be gathered about the phone to do this in a compliant fashion makes me shudder.

  • Respec into the trades wouldn’t fix anything either, because it would just as well flood those fields with labor supply and obliterate the wages and union protections there.

The problem isn’t just that some people are unemployed, it’s that many/most people are unemployable - there is no price at which their work is productive enough for them to be paid enough to buy even the product they themselves made or any other product for that matter.

There’s simply no way to create that equilibria again, because we’ve reached in many ways a dead end to our technological development to where the only way to further optimize and make tech viable economically is not via expensive, risky R&D ventures but with workforce reductions and legal loopholes that extract money from the poors i.e. Uber and even then - only low interest rates and resulting bloated stocks built on the house of cards of international trade and lies and investor financial manipulation / game of hot potato created the wealth that permitted low prices, all the while most of the resultant inflation went into assets held by the rich, not wages of the poor.

That’s why fascism is rising, there’s no productive capital left to buy to make money, only to cash out to exchange for power.

  • Uh-huh, whatever you say lead brains, maybe get off Facebook/TikTok/whatever you old people use for a bit and smell the roses: FOSS is reaching new heights, Vim, Tmux, i3, gopher/gemini is all gen-z. There are plenty of people out there reasoning about design and software dev better than ever before at a much higher complexity level and plenty of low level C chads, just look at the kinds of insane attacks we have now and the sheer complexity of security.

I know C myself and I can read a bit of x86 Assembly for reversing and that’s all just from hobbies to me as my job is more GRC side of things.

On top of all that we got over the OOP brainrot and left Java in the dustbin of history where it belongs, picking up Python on the way. UML is still very much taught, so is actual proper parallelism, your average Gen-X melts at the sight of a semaphore, and your average millennial at a for loop.

On top of all that we got self-hosted and homelabbing and actual politicization of FOSS and open willingness to push back against corpos, we go where Stallman never dared and honor the legacy of his ideas, and we don’t go where he did bother, like his age of consent thing, not repeating the mistakes of the past.

No, what’s stupid is one shot kill stupidly accurate sniper weapons in the first place.

Either way no one is happy. I think some simple solutions are:

    1. Limit actual sniper ammo, maybe 5-10 rounds total per life.
    2. Anything further than like 150m should require zeroing and accounting for wind even in casual games. It could be simplified/not true to life, but it should be done for balance. IRL snipers are not very viable for most things for a reason. They’re a specialist tool, not an actual alternative to an assault rifle.
    3. No one-shot kill bodyshots from snipers.
    4. Damage heavily reduced with increasing distance.
    5. Accuracy heavily penalized for anything but staying still while prone.
    6. Require a few frames of no mouse/right stick inputs to hold breath/stabilize, limiting snipers to largely static targets
    7. For those who do like to run around with long range weapons especially in games like Battlefield, add a nice DMR. Should fire single shot semi-auto only, but have ammo and mags comparable to an assault rifle, better precision, but damage pretty much the same as an AR.
