I have an honest followup question to this meme (because I lived it): how long do you expect the girlfriend to stay?

At age 23 I was in a great relationship, we were in love, then I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I stopped being able to do physical things, I dropped out of school, I was bedridden. She went from being my girlfriend to being my nurse. She cared for me for a year, one long miserable year, then she left.

Is she at fault for leaving?

If we use the original definition of the word “meme”, which is “a unit of cultural transmission” then yes literally everything is a meme.

It was coined to be analogous to the word “gene”. One of the similarities is that the borders of genes and memes are fuzzy: when you split a gene in half, you get two genes. Both genes and memes are nested inside of themselves like a Russian doll.

The misdefinition of “meme” as “image macro on the internet” was ill informed, and is thankfully going out of style.

This is not a long term solution. I feel your frustration with the genocidal entity that is Israel, but forcing any ethnic group to be second class citizens is immoral and shortsighted.

Jews were oppressed, now they are oppressors, and you want them to be oppressed again? That’s a horrific cycle of war and injustice with no end in sight.

Whenever I bring up Palestine around normies, the most common response is “they have been killing each other for 2000 years” type of ahistorical nonsense.

These people aren’t inherently dumb. When educated, most will adopt the moral, anti-genocide position. 40% is not enough, but it’s so much higher than it was a decade ago. We are making (slow, painful) progress.

Totally agree that we can’t take Trump at his word, but the man has been on camera for decades and there is no footage of him drunk. I don’t believe that Trump has the self-control to hide a drinking habit.

Also I believe Trump’s #1 motivator is narcissism. He may not have cared that his brother died, but he did see himself in his brother. He saw the devastating results of lifelong alcohol abuse and committed himself to avoiding it.

Is there any evidence Trump is on Adderall? Other than his erratic, occasionally manic behavior, which could be a sign of any upper.

I always figured he was abusing pseudoephedrine, since he had a drawer full of it in his first term.

I could also imagine him doing a kind of “Dr. Feelgood” mix of drugs just like Reagan and Hitler. He is following in their footsteps. This idea seems unlikely though, Trump appears to be somewhat of an honest teetotaler due to his family history of drug abuse and early death.

Seattle resident for 10 years here, I sold my car 5 years ago and I don’t really miss it.

I was paying $275/month for parking alone, and the car was only worth $4k, it felt insane to pay that much.

I’m lucky to have access to decent bus service, and light rail is good and expanding.

For some awkward trips I will use Uber, and when I need to travel further then I rent a car, but the total cost of this is much less than the cost of parking a car.

I think you don’t understand how broken American democracy is. I would suggest you look into Princeton’s study on Democracy, the largest ever study of electoral inputs and outcomes.

Their results are rather shocking, including one of the most haunting charts I have ever seen:

This gigantic, years-long study shows that if 10% of Americans support a bill it has a 30% chance to pass, and if 90% of Americans support a bill, it still has that same 30% chance to pass.

Tldr: the opinion of the voters in America have no influence on its government. Votes don’t matter, only money counts. Your civic duties go much further than a mere vote.

I don’t think it’s comforting at all.

If you remove the top 1%, the remaining wealth is concentrated in the top 10%. This group of people is highly invested in the status quo; their wealth and power is usually used to prop up the current system.

These people are reffered to by many names: petit bourgeoisie, professional managerial class, small business tyrants, etc.

Your heart is in the right place, but I think “no regrets” is an insane take.

As a fellow unemployed CS grad, I once thought software engineering was my best shot at a middle class life.

Now after 5 years of unemployment, the financial reality is setting in. I will never be able to afford a home. I will never be able to afford a family. I will never be able to afford retirement. I will never be able to afford a vacation. I will never be able to afford most things that make life worth living.

I thought I was going to be an engineer. I thought I was going to be a professional. Now I’m fasting at the end of every month bc food stamps always run out, and the electric company is threatening to shut off my power.

Choosing CS is deeply regrettable.

Most American millennials I know have the same retirement plan as myself : a bullet or shotgun shell to the brainstem.

Why? The reasons vary:

American optimism gave us big dreams, but the American economy crushed them.

The open internet made us realize that we are, in fact, the baddies on the world stage.

A decent retirement for millennials will cost $6-10million, a feat most cannot achieve without inheritance.

Climate change is making our only planet uninhabitable, and our nation is leading the effort to make it even worse.

The destructive forces of deregulation and financialization have destroyed so much of what makes life worth living in the modern west. And there is no end in sight- no political movement has the power to compete, the political system is fully corrupted, not even a heroic Luigi to put fear into our financial oligarchs.

So my question is this: where does this end up? Technofeudalism? Revolution? Sci Fi dystopia?

I think it’s safe to say that telecom deregulation and the subsequent AM radio boom is one of the core reasons why American adults above 50 are rightwing/fascist.

Why limit yourself to “health insurance” execs?

They are among the most egregious execs, but the capitalist rot has infected the entire system, not just one industry.

It’s so good that these countries are finally showing a bit of support for the Palestinian people, but unfortunately I think this is a sloppy way to do it that will likely end in failure.

To recognize a state of Palestine, you must define it’s borders. What will those borders be? So far these politicians have refused to say, it is much safer for them to be vague and noncommittal.

Surely it would not be the pre-1948 borders, that would literally wipe Israel off the map.

Ideally it would be post-1967 borders with mutually agreed upon land swaps. According to the UN this is the most just two-state division. But it is also a plan that has been proposed and dismissed for many decades. Israel would need to be forced to accept a plan like this.

One could also consider the horrific possibility that they will use some post-2005 borders, this would make the Palestinian “state” a series of small unconnected bantustans. This would probably end the genocide, but it would also give international approval to the apartheid.
