Marmite is a test of willpower.

Marmite is a test of willpower.

Yeah, but that happens only once per person, whilst the other one happens every day.

Yeah, but today is always the first day of the rest of your life.
Nowadays, there are really only two classes:
What was called “Middle Class” generally are just workers who earn a bit more, though the older Middle Class did at times manage to save enough to buy enough assets that they could start living of the income from those assets and not have to work anymore. That’s not the case for young people nowadays who would qualify as Middle Class due to their level of formal education and the kind of work they do because it’s way harder for them to save and asset prices are through the roof.

Having worked in various countries of Europe with various different work cultures, I can guarantee you that at least in Software Development the productivity of working more than 8h a day regularly (you can get away with doing it for a week or two, but no further) is so much less than in with 8h/day or less, that you’re literally producing less results with your work in a whole long-hours day of work than you do in an 8h day.
In simple terms, tired people do negative work and people working long hours regularly end up chronically tired.
Maybe it works differently for people doing stuff that’s all about salesmanship (like Business Angel) for whom more hours means more “meets”, but in my personal experience it definitelly works as I described for people actually doing heavy thinking work that has to actually work rather than merelly doing talkie-talkie with hard to compare results and where efficiency is near impossible to measure.

It’s not just based on the police response but how other people around him are behaving, for example on their phones and calling the police.
You can see people passing by and ignoring that shit as if it was normal.
A guy shouting “I’ll kill you” whilst pursuing somebody into a store would trigger the people at the store calling the police in most of Europe.

Well, the video starts already well into the altercation and that’s a high-end main shopping street with all the most expensive shops and the kind of place where there is usually police around, but yeah it’s a a bit of of 50\50 thing whether even in a place like London or Paris a copper would pop-up in time for the video.
Also it depends on how likely people are to call the police in such a situation (if the guy did this in, for example Scandinavia, the police would likey end up involved).

What kind of fucked up country is this were the police didn’t immediatly came to this altercation and detained the guy.
I mean, he’s not only being violent, he’s even making death threats.
Gotta love it when you come into a bit of a bitch & moan article about Tech and end up learning something new about Human Physiology and Medicine.
Cheers for that!
Hence why there’s “boiling” and there’s “evaporating” - two things that aren’t the same hence two different words.
Being alive has both a 100% morbidity rate and a 100% mortality rate.
It’s wonderful how the expression “humble Arch Linux user” manages to pack a contradiction in a mere 4 words.

Dutch people pay so much tax because dutch companies pay so little tax, so pretty much the entire burden of paying the costs of the State comes from the wallets of individuals (whilst companies too are owned by individuals, those rich enough have many ways of avoiding paying tax on that and a lot of the biggest owners of the companies making profits in The Netherlands - whilst paying little tax on said profits - aren’t even resident in The Netherlands).
In countries were the tax take is more evenly balanced between people and businesses, people pay less taxes for more services (The Netherlands doesn’t even have a National Health Service, only a mixed Health Insurance system).
I lived in The Netherlands over a decade ago and already back then the country already had Northern European levels of taxation with nowhere near the levels of Public Services that countries with similar individual taxation - such as the Scandinavians - had and I doubt a decade of right-wing neoliberals in government has made things any better.

Not the previous poster but I think the “dirty translation” is because in Portugal some things weren’t translated at all (we use the actual word “copas” even though it’s not a Portuguese word) and others are translated differently (were the Spanish use “bastos” - clubs - we use “paus” - sticks).
Notice how one of the underlying messages of the cartoon is that it’s Zionist Karen that is the real antisemite: by deeming that those demonstrating against the killing of children are antisemite (literally: against Jews), she is implying that killing children is a Jewish thing to do.
This is very much the kind of racism displayed by those who equate anti-Israel with antisemitic: they’re implying that Israel and its actions are all core Jewsih chracteristics, de facto slandering all Jews including those who disagree with Israel and/or its actio s, so they’re the ones who by definition are antisemite.

Boris Johnson is a dumb person’s idea of an intelligent person.
Legitimate Interest is an attempt at working around the GDPR using a loophole in the ruling meant to permit processing of data in situations such as when a business has a trading relationship with a client.
However the legal clarification from the EU Commission says: “Your company/organisation must also check that by pursuing its legitimate interests the rights and freedoms of those individuals are not seriously impacted, otherwise your company/organisation cannot rely on grounds of legitimate interest as a justification for processing the data and another legal ground must be found.” (see here) and there is a “right to privacy” in EU law.
So supposedly that nearly endless list of “partners” (read: advert providers, trackers and other assorted businesses who make money from breaking people’s privacy) cannot use legitimate interest to track you as that would break your right to privacy.
That said, in practice they probably do, and until they get fined hard they’ll keep on doing it, so as others said, don’t used a Chrome-based browser and use a good Ad Blocker add-on.
I love it how you just want to do something simple and very, very common and normal with a command but you don’t know the magic flags to get it to do it and they’re not just a logical one (like, say “-a” for all) so you do a man for it and it has something like 50 flags listed in alphabethical rather than functional order, some of which only make sense in specific combinations (which are never show together and have to be found by reading the entries for all 50 flags) and there are no examples anywhere to be found of normal usage scenarios for that command.
So that’s when you use some internet search engine and it turns out the most common simplest use of it is something like “doshit --lol --nokidding --verbose=3”.

Lebensraum!
If you want to see Nazi late stage-like behaviour, look at Israel.
The Republicans with Trump are more like Mussolini, even down to how Trump seems less of a warmonger than the Democrats but still supports the present day Nazis.
Both parties in the US supporting some kind of Fascism has a very 1930s vibe to it and if the Democrats had won, that would still be the case.
It’s just that in places like Lemmy you’re exposed to a lot of Political Propaganda from the Democrat Party which is just subtlety-free maximum alarmism (it was their main technique during the election campaign) so obviously the perception it induces is that their opposition is of the worst possible kind of Far Right Populist (ironic when the Democrats in Israel support something a lot more like Nazism at its later most extremelly racist and murderous stage) when the reality, whilst likely bad, is subtly different: as I pointed out and judging by his previous presidence, Trump doesn’t seem to be a warmonger, which makes him less of a warmonger that the Democrats often are and hence makes him more like the Fascist Autoritarians of the Mussolini kind than those of the Hitler kind.
It doesn’t help that the typically well educated person is overeducated on Nazism and undereducated on all other forms of Fascism, so all far-right populism wanna-be autocrats seem to those people to be like the only system like that they’ve learned enough about: Nazism.
