I’m honestly surprised Gavin didn’t think this would come out.

Either he thought that if it hadn’t come out while he was Dublin manager, it never would, or he thought that it would come out and no one would care.

That Gavin and FF got so caught out by it, and just completely failed to address it properly at all is mental though. They could have sorted it so easily and kept Jim in the race.

Exactly. It didn´t need to be this way, but at this stage the chain of events is so damning for Jim Gavin and Fianna Fáil. The party were alerted to the situation in early September by a Journalist. On a seperate occassion(s) Jim Gavin denied it to Fianna Fáil and together they just brazened ahead.

I know people that have this supreme level of … something, either ambition or entitlement maybe, that causes them to plough ahead in a naive way. They think that they are too exceptional to experience consequences. It’s spectacular, and I think Jim Gavin and Michéal Martin have a lot in common that way - both with overconfidence and a shady history with finances. (Not withstanding the positive aspects to them too).
