Well… I definitely didn’t like her just listing out this big rapid fire list of names who are Officially Bad People now, and we can’t support them. So I picked one at random and decided to look it up.

Well, that’s pretty fucked, sure.
Taylor Swift? WTF

IDK man. People can say what they want to say. The genocide in Gaza is so bad that I kind of get it if you want to say Taylor is being wrong if she doesn’t say anything, but I still don’t really like this thing of saying someone is officially a bad person until they say what we want them to say. People can say what they want. There’s this weird fine line between “I am advocating for what I believe in because this cause is so morally unambiguous, honestly, you should too” (which it sounds like Taylor’s fans are doing) and “… and you need to advocate for it too, or else fuck your ticket sales, SAY WHAT I WANT YOU TO SAY OR YOU’RE BAD.”
(And so Roger Waters says, “The whole bloody lot of 'em.” WTF dude, you didn’t even know who was on the list and not until this lady listed off all the names to you, you clearly have no idea what they actually said or didn’t say.)
IDK man. I watched more of it, and I kind of like what Roger Waters had to say. He pulled up this thing about Nick Cave that was actually really damning, and got upset about it (as he should). But this lady is just an idiot. Taylor Swift is on the exact same list as David Draiman. “If you’re an American Jew, chances are you’ve been brainwashed.” She’s just out here with this weird grimace on her face, finding reasons to yell about how these random people from this random list her Twitter followers assembled for her are bad now.
Taylor swift is a billionaire, can’t be a good person by definition
she might personally be a nice person. the role of billionaire that she performs isn’t. again, it isn’t about personal morals.
Out of all the billionaires, people want to pick on the one who got there actually by her own merit instead of by taking advantage
Her parents were bankers who moved to Nashville and literally bankrolled her career.
She was always part of the 1%. Her music is vacuous and empty.
She certainly didn’t achieve anything on her own merits
@Tangentism @PhilipTheBucket
To add, her silence on #Palestine - to me- is a case of wanting to make sales to everyone. Taking a stand either way implies a loss of revenue. To many, money is all that matters.
I don’t think she has enough of a personality to take a stand and if she did, it would be incredibly generic.
@Tangentism Certainly possible. I know little about her, to be honest

Why has Nutomic SAID NOTHING ABOUT PALESTINE FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS, or the Gaza flotilla, or the genocide by starvation that is HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, and look he doesn’t even know the difference between the “Gaza flag” and the Palestinian flag

IS
MONEYLEMMY ALL THAT MATTERS TO HIMThis is why I think this whole line of argument about Taylor Swift is especially stupid. People can say what they want to say, or not. I’m not in charge of badgering Nutomic to take any particular “stand” on any particular issue, or weigh in on any particular genocide. It doesn’t make him a bad person if he doesn’t. He can say what he wants about Palestine, or trans issues, or really, anything. Same for Taylor Swift.
I do kind of agree with giving people grief about particular brain-dead or evil takes (Nick Cave’s fell into that category to me.) But most of this stuff just seems like a way to try to harass any public figure into supporting exactly what someone has decided they “should” support, and I don’t think they should be obligated to do that.
@PhilipTheBucket No idea why - nor what that has to do with Taylor Swift.
My point is that you can also pick out people who are highly regarded who haven’t said anything about some particular issue, without it being any type of bad thing about them. People are just allowed to say or not say what they want. I just wanted to bring up a different particular example about it to show the principle.
@PhilipTheBucket Ah.
Sure, they can say or not, as they please. And one is free to speculate as to why.
I don’t see Taylor Swift as any different from any other billionaire. It is not possible to accrue that much wealth on your own merit. She didn’t get there through album sales, she got there through hoarding real estate and becoming a landlord, and investing heavily in the corporations that have ruined our lives.
She literally sang songs, people liked them, and each of those people individually decided to pay money for the songs, and some of it went to her. She has this large wealth because she directly created what was going to create the enjoyment on the behalf of that large a number of people. Almost every other billionaire is there because they were able to set up an empire where someone else’s hard work and talent went into their pocket instead, but hers is different.
I get it if you want to say that the system should change so that everyone involved in the physical intermediate steps of the process should also get a thriving wage, even if she gets less, and yes that is definitely accurate. But saying “she’s a bad person” as a result and in particular that you don’t see her as “any different” from Elon Musk or Larry Ellison is just living in a big virtue-signaling fantasy world.

She made about $1.6 billion mostly from ticket sales, and then spent $150 million of it on real estate. Where are you getting this idea that she made her money in real estate or investment?
Silence is complicity.
@PhilipTheBucket To be honest, I don’t like her either, and I tend to avoid her vids/interviews. However, I was curious as to what Waters had to say, so I basically tuned her out.
I also wasn’t all that interested in random celebs. I don’t buy modern music so it has no effect on my spending or support for any of them.
But overall, yes, I agree with you.
Yeah. Like imagine if someone had made this exact same video about Roger Waters, picking out his weird public statements about Ukraine and then lumping him in with a bunch of people who said things that were much worse, saying he’s a POS, brainwashed, and fuck him, and putting him on their enemies list as a result. It’s just weird. People can say what they want to say.
I mean I generally liked Nick Cave’s music quite a lot, so finding out he is a POS in at least this one respect was definitely relevant I guess. I agree with you, I didn’t have much issue with anything Roger himself had to say. But the host is the literal personification of the right-wing “cancel culture” caricature.
