Landlords and real estate speculators are big. Housing is a huge proportion of a poorer person’s paycheck, and western countries don’t allow you to change that with strikes like they often do with wages. You can easily drive a population into poverty just by owning all the real estate and charging high prices, and even left-of-center governments are generally not willing to meaningfully deal with real estate speculation.

I think of it this way.
In 1968, when GOP Nixon was elected, one Union salary could support a family of four with enough for a house, a car, and money to send the kids to college. A minimum wage job could support one person living alone. In those days, $1 million was considered a vast fortune.
By 1992, when GOP George Bush Sr. left office, ‘middle class’ was two incomes to keep the family going, and $1 million was what a rich guy paid for a party.
