I didn’t know Google Video was actually launched three months before YouTube was (and Dailymotion about a month before). Google then acquired YouTube about 6 months into its existence, and shut down Google Video ~2 years later.
And to add to it. Amazon introduces video on demand service Amazon Video in September 7th of 2006. Youtube then merged Google on October 9. Perhaps Google had seen the desire for on-demand movies, and TV shows and wanted to grow Youtube to host that feature as well.
