I dug up a new garden bed yesterday. My parents are strangely destructive when it comes to the garden and yard.

Every fall they go around trimming the plants and trees, which is good. They also dig up the majority of the plants they planted in the spring and chuck it all into brown yard waste bags. I don’t get it because there’s still life left in all those plants. At least they stopped shipping it all off as waste when the city does yard waste collection and leave it for me now.

For the new garden bed, I removed the layer of grass and dug a little deeper. Once I got deep enough, I chucked a bunch of branch cuttings into the pit. Then I hand ripped all the grass and made a layer on top of the branches. Then I threw a layer of twigs with leaves on top. Then a layer of plant cuttings. Next I put all the dug up soil over all that. Finally I put a layer of cuttings from the evergreen tree on top to help retain moisture underneath it.

Later in October I’ll add fallen leaves and a layer of mushroom mulch from a nearby mushroom farm. Over winter I’ll bury fruit and vegetable waste in that area too. When springtime arrives, I may have to give the top layers a little mixing but I think it will be good to start planting new crops.

At least most of the hard work is done for now until I am ready for the mushroom mulch. Gotta keep my little decomposer friends happy, they are what make my plants grow :)

This made me so happy. I’m just going to eat lunch then I’m going to spend the rest of the day in the garden doing plant chores.
