Love this shot! It reminds me of more recent works by @[email protected] in Bilbao, which I stumbled over on Pixelfed the other day.

    Droguería Alfonso Perfumería

    El Catalán

    Charcutería ultramarinos La Merced

645? Is that a street number?

Here a link to a more recent picture.

It’s fascinating how everything that makes the spot charming seems to have been destroyed. Of course, we don’t see the store itself in the newer picture (though what we see is not promising), but the decorations on the neighbouring shop has also been replaced with yellow bricks, and what used to be a covered hole available as sidewalk is now a gaping hole with a fence around it.

Of course it’s not the fault of the store owners - they are just trying to survive. But something went wrong somewhere along the way.

Milk was $0.06. Six cents! I can’t make out the units in the photo, I’ll assume maybe a pint or half gallon. That is super cheap even adjusting for inflation. It would still only be $1.34 in 2024 dollars.

I mean, I pay about 1.50 for a half-gallon, so that seems right to me

Ha wow, maybe it’s just my area here in MA - it’s rare to see half gallons at less than $3 nowadays.

Two books about the owner of a Harlem furniture store, circa 1960-1980.

The hero is a member of the community who wants to do right, respect the law and his neighbors.

So, every once in a while he has to fence some stolen jewelry or help a crooked cop rob some numbers spots, but basically he’s almost 100% honest.
