The last couple of years I’ve been trying to read stuff in 4 languages. This year I want to read books equally spread out across those languages. I’ll probably go for 16 books, 4 from each. Finding interesting books in my target languages is also part of the challenge

4·5 days agoI wonder what “doesn’t provide access” means here. They are not pre-installed? Can you not install any android app on it?
I have sensitive ears. I don’t hide from fireworks but really don’t get why every celebration has to be so loud. Half of the time it’s not even fireworks but those mini bombs teenagers throw around
Hey some bugs are cool, I wouldn’t exclude them

cats@lemmy.world•Do any of you actually call your cats by their names?
5·9 days agoI don’t think I’ve ever called a cat by its name. Depending on what they’re doing it’s either “hey”, “pspsps”, or snapping fingers. I don’t think the cats care either. But names are useful when talking to other humans like “Muffin picked a fight with Potato yesterday. Potato won”
Of course this isn’t our galaxy, that’s why OP was so kind to add the missing banana for us
Broccoli on pizza is a thing though and it’s actually quite good when done right

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Random idea: a federated alternative to Amazon Prime built from independent shops?English
22·14 days agoWe had this in Greece and it was great. Then you could order through the aggregator itself. Then it got its own delivery service that shops could use (still better than all other delivery companies). Then shops were added that don’t have their own site nor a physical shop. Now it’s trying to expand to other countries and there is a subscription that gives you lower delivery fees. It’s still good and most people buy stuff from there but it’s clear it’s trying to become Amazon and I’m afraid most similar centralized services will go this way sooner or later.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•[discussion] Drivers ranting about traffic enforcementEnglish
0·1 month agoYeah I wasn’t talking about the teenagers but about the bars themselves. The point is, it doesn’t matter if it’s illegal, plenty of illegal things are treated the same way. It matters that it’s not taken seriously while it should.

2·1 month agoSimilar thoughts definitely exist for other things that are not regularly enforced. There is a well known Facebook group in my city that tracks the location of ticket inspectors in public transport so you can avoid them. And bar owners in neighborhoods warn each other whenever there are checks for underage drinking or smoking inside because these laws are also rarely followed.
But I agree that if someone said similar things about health inspections it wouldn’t sit well with people. And it’s weird that something as dangerous as speeding or running red lights is not considered as important but rather as a minor thing.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why books haven't all been translated to every language by now?
1·1 month agoInteresting how Google Translate returns brown-haired for both Brunhårig and Brun hårig while DeepL doesn’t but they both return brown-haired when provided with the whole phrase. Shows how trustworthy auto-translation is.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why books haven't all been translated to every language by now?
4·1 month agoHonestly even when it’s translated by a human you can usually tell it’s a translation. I try not to read translations, it’s just not the same.

That’s part of the fun actually as different countries prefer different genres. So there’ll be much more sci-fi in English than in Spanish for example where I’ll read mostly horror and drama.
